Beware the Sloth

Beware the sloth. What kind of sloth am I referencing here?

Sloth is a metaphor I use to describe the chronically lazy.

There is lazy and then there is sloth lazy. I'm sure you've heard about it before. Or have you?

Sloths kind of pop up everywhere in American culture. Most would deny they are sloths or have sloth-like tendencies but sloth is a problem that plagues every company and every family at some point down the road. I'm going to share some insights on this that I hope will be both entertaining and enlightening.

Can you imagine a person who literally moves state to state and church to church just to be able to maintain a work free existence, solely living off of the hospitality and goodwill of others? This kind of abuse of very giving people is where this ingenious metaphor was birthed.

Of course we can't just go around calling lazy people lazy can we? What does that make us look like: some kind of self-righteous judge? On the other hand, we simply cannot allow our bank accounts, our friends' or family's bank accounts, our churches, or even our companies get suckered into a sob story that actually is just that...."a story". No company should ever retain a non-producing employee. It defeats the very concept of business: to generate profit.

There are the truly needy in our society. We have one of the most generous social service and welfare systems in the world to assist them. We have thousands of homeless shelters and even more churches who spend almost every waking and sleeping moment helping the needy.

The truly needy are not sloths. The sloth is the purposefully needy. They function much like a parasitic organism that truly has what we call "entitlement fever". They see the belongings of others as their own. They feel they should be cared for. They truly are the fruit of a generation who believes they should "have it now" without having worked or earning it.


Being the optimist that I am, I believe they can be deprogrammed and reprogrammed with a new life purpose. However, it is impossible for this to happen when absolutely everyone is always paying all of their bills for them: rent, clothing, food, transportation, medical, etc. Why would anyone be motivated to work and move to self-independence when they have spent years being cared for by others much like a helpless infant?

I'd like to introduce you to the concept of STOP. LOOK, and LEAVE.  If you have a family member or close friend who stopped working, stopped looking for work, and exists solely upon the charity of others even though they are able bodied you need to stop. Stop helping them. Stop buying their stories. Stop bankrolling them. As long as you pay for them, YOU are part of the problem. It is like giving drugs to an addict. As long as you provide what they need, they have no motivation to change.

Look. Look at the situation realistically. You've been helping them for a long time. How long has it been: a year? Two years? MULTIPLE YEARS? If you are helping them, I bet you a hundred dollar bill they are playing the same con game with someone else. These individuals are MASTER MANIPULATORS. Look closely at the situation and evaluate the facts, not just your emotional response to the "concept" of a needy person.

Leave. Leave the situation and go your way. If all the sloth enablers simply stopped supporting lazy, nonworking, and entitlement attitudes, the situation can more quickly be remedied.

STOP. LOOK. LEAVE.

Is it possible to have a sloth on your company payroll? Sure it is. Employees in any kind of company should be asked to fill out a monthly progress report in which they estimate how much time they spent on each given aspect of their job. For example, in a recent client session, I asked "Henry" to tell me his responsibilities at his last job. His reply was that he managed. OK. What exactly had he managed? I asked again. His reply: "stuff". That told me next to nothing. I then created a check list in which he was to estimate how he spent his work time daily: how many minutes or hours on phone calls, email correspondence, data processing or data updating, in meetings, planning, sales, and so on. In our next session, he returned the form to me blank. When I asked why he hadn't filled it out, he answered simply and said he really couldn't say what he had done. How can a man who can't even tell me what he did at his last job be trained to speak intelligently and fluently about his passions, his job responsibilities, and so forth? It was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I didn't know how to coach him. So I ventured into unknown waters. That is where I discovered what I have hence called the "company sloth".

A company sloth looks busy if you happen to glance his or her way. But in an atmosphere that lacks accountability, this is the person most likely to be taking long leisurely breaks, getting to work late, leaving early, and the most unresponsive when things are asked of him or her. These kind of employees cost a company a lot of money. In this recent decade of massive layoffs due to the economy, they were also the first to be canned.

We all have a lazy bone somewhere in our body. It usually comes out when we are at home during our leisure time. But for those who are leisure addicted, this quickly can evolve into a non-work attitude. And that is when it becomes a very deeply rooted problem that can eventually lead a person down a very slippery career slope. This great nation was built upon the back of workers, not slackers.

I'm sure you know one rather professionally or personally. Stop. Look. Leave. Don't enable.

What Does Age Have to Do with It?

Today I was reflecting on the key issues I want to blog about. First I asked myself what issues were most commonly bothering my clients. I created a list of subjects I hope to meander my way through. At the top of this list is age. When we are young, we are indeed immortal. The world is at our fingertips. Our looks and energy are contagious. We feel like anything is possible. However, as we grow older, something changes. Perhaps the stress and disappointments of life wear on us. Or perhaps our mirrors depress us. Or maybe it is simply what our peers say to us, "You can't wear that! My daughter wears that!”. “You are too old for him/her,", "You are too old to go to medical school," "You are too old to have a baby," "You are too old to start a new business," and on the negative mantras go.

Be honest. You've heard these things haven't you? Now if you are one of the spring chickens reading this blog, keep in mind that you might even have said some of these things to a parent or other older adult.

Why does anyone think aging stops anything? As far as I can tell, the only thing age can stop is the reproductive cycle. Who really can imagine or wants to be 60 years old and pregnant? So I admit some things naturally do stop happening as we age, but that doesn't mean we should stop.

Now let's move this topic into the world of work. This is a work blog. The central point of what I will always write about will probably have something to do with getting hired, staying hired, advancing in one's career, self-development, or some other topic directly related to generating self-created wealth.

Age is a scary thing.  But it doesn't have to be. We face much discrimination as we grow older. For example, how many fortune 500 companies have a gray haired woman sitting at their front desk wearing a frumpy housecoat? Or how many sales agents are a man who simply can't navigate a large bustling city because he gets confused with road signs and cannot operate a GPS? Are these examples hurtful? Do they make you feel angry? They should! But that is the reality in which our modern world works. There are prejudices against aging people, but let's look closer at what GENERATES these emotions and beliefs.

From personal observations, I really think these ideas come from what stereotypes and what people perceive aging people to be like. Have you ever met a 70 year old sky diver? Or an 80 year old world traveler? I did and when I first met them, I was shocked.  How could they have the gumption to do that activity at that age? Weren't they afraid of the risks such as potential bodily harm? After this, I pondered. Why wouldn't someone healthy and with the desire, do those things and anything else they want to? It didn't matter what I thought. The fact remained that they did it because they wanted to.

In life, age is a mindset. As long as a mind is healthy and fully functional, there is no reason that person can't do whatever they have always done or what they want to do. Many professors in the USA work well into their 70's and even 80's. In some countries, people are not so fortunate. Did you realize many countries have FORCED retirement for all government employees at age 61-65? The reasons for this are many. One reason, for example, in South Korea, is the small land mass, limited job opportunities, and a growing population. The concept is if the elders are forced to retire, it opens up jobs and income potential for younger workers just starting out with their lives and families. I must comment here that I highly disagree with this. In a Constitution possessing society, freedom is truly an individual matter. And one of the greatest freedoms in the cosmos is the RIGHT TO WORK AND GENERATE SELF CREATED INCOME.

In the USA while we don't have forced retirement for most occupations, we have social pressure to retire. The predisposed concept of aging is that once 60 or older, we become useless, incompetent, and worthy of being put on a shelf. This is the greatest lie I can imagine. The post 50 crowd have the greatest knowledge base on the planet as they have both academic training and experience.

Companies should rediscover the golden resource hiring healthy older Americans affords them. They get experience. They get the opinions of a special select group of individuals who perhaps have lived and witnessed a particular industry from its birth: say a car manufacturing plant in the north, or a computer chip manufacturing plant in Texas. From experience is born a great resource to be valued and accessed, especially in the turbulent financial markets on the horizon. Their voice and opinions are irreplaceable by the younger, inexperienced worker.

Sometimes the best corporate blend of employees is both young and old in mixed groupings. One of the most successful individuals I have ever met, my mentor Charlie, shared one of his greatest secrets with me in building a company work force. The strategy is based on placing new hires with an older experienced employee. They become teammates and partners on projects for three to six months and sometimes into a year. Midway through, they switch roles and the younger must take the initiative in the partnership to complete the work tasks, meetings, and projects at hand. If either complain to coworkers about the arrangement, they are asked to write an essay about why they are having conflicts and then share it with a rotating group of individuals whose job is to provide feedback in to what the others have written to help them self-reflect. The result is a greater teamwork environment, cooperation verses internal competition, and a mutual respect between older seasoned souls and the newbies. While some companies encourage cut throat competition, this is not sustainable for the long term employee retention, work environment, or company growth.

On the individual level, a person must choose what is right for the self. However, if a person over 50 is looking for a new job, he or she must be able to be taught, be flexible, and adapt to ever changing work environments. Honestly, the hardest person in the world I have ever coached was a man in his 50's. The problem resided in the fact due to his vast experience in his given field, he thought he knew everything and had a solution to every problem. But he communicated these ideas in a hostile and demanding way that sent people scurrying away from him, not toward him. After twenty job interviews, he had not received a call back and he couldn't understand why. His attitude was lethal for his job search success. No matter what a person knows, he or she must learn how to convey what information is needed when it is needed, and no more and no less. An overbearing, demanding, know it all is never going to get hired.

Age is reflected in attitude. Having a friendly open presentation style is very attractive. Regardless of age, anyone can learn how to repackage him or herself to any new work environment they desire to be part of. But the following things must be true in order to make this happen:

1) A willingness to change. I call this "evolving".
2) A willingness to learn new ways of speaking and rephrasing him or herself.
3) A willingness to evolve one's appearance to look contemporary, fashionable, and in touch with modern times. I have seen too many people who are hostile to any constructive criticism about their appearance. I'm sorry but interviewers have eye balls as well as ears....


Physical appearance is as imperative in job searches as skill set and presentation style. It isn't just the clothes one wears but his/her overall appearance. This fact angers many but it remains a reality. You can be 60 years old but you don't have to have yellow teeth and bad hair. We have dentists for a reason as well as hair salons.  If you want something bad enough, including getting EMPLOYED, you must develop the right attitude to be willing to update anything it takes to land the position. Ear hair, hair growing out of face moles, chin whiskers, unattractive hair styles, bad breath, or ragged and dirty nails have got to GO. We assume everyone knows this but trust me, this is not the case.

A few weeks ago, a woman around my age asked for some job searching help. As we drank coffee in a local cafe, I found myself transfixed watching a hair at least 1 1/2 inches long, growing out of a mole the size of a dime, blowing in the breeze located smack on the side of her cheek. Should I have said something to her? Would this really be rude? I kind of think if someone is paying me for help, I should tell her the truth. The mole was part of her body but that hair easily could have been plucked. I did marvel at its blackness compared to the red of her hair.

The body will age. This can't be helped. But anyone can adjust attitudes and maintain health to the best of his or her ability. Is it really that hard to want to look and feel good? If we are going to compete in the work force, we need to work to have every advantage possible. And in my perspective, if a person isn't willing to work at being their best, they are not going to be a good employee to anyone else. Again, it all goes back to attitude.

This is a lot to chew on. And for some, the process is overwhelming. Where should one begin?

What does age have to do with it? A lot, a little, some....

It just depends. But our attitude is the pull that lands the fish, not a number on our application.

The Why of Job Interview Strategy

Job searching seems to be a national past time. With hordes of the unemployed roaming around the Internet much like cows in a pasture, unsure of exactly where to go, but roaming at large, the statistical chances of landing a job are decreasing.

Think about it. We live in an ever increasing job candidate pool with the number of available jobs drying up faster than wet paint. And on top of that, DESIRABLE jobs seem the most elusive.

Regardless of the number of jobs available, all employers are seeking the same thing: the best candidate. The difference is in the perception of who exactly is indeed, the best choice for the job at hand.

Many high tech interviewers are using a strategy few seem aware of: psychological profiling woven into the interview process. This poses a problem for the job seeker who is unaware of these tactics.
It is a disadvantage because a candidate's flexibility, mindset, team playing ability, attitude, and even their personality is being measured without them even knowing it. Of course, every job field uses a different measuring methodology and scrutiny. How can a job seeker even begin to crack the newest obstacle in their path?

This was one question I pondered on during my research before I launched Charlie McGillicuddy LLC. The entire focal point of my coaching work is centered on helping job seekers to learn how to interview to beat the interviewers at their own game. The coaching process follows the following steps.

While most interviewing questions seem relatively the same, there is variation depending on the employment field and even the company environment and location. The client first identifies his or her job field: engineering, law, corporate business: CEO, CTO, CFO, or small company management, education, medical, or other. If business, the actual industry is evaluated: entertainment, financial, product development, medical product, and so on. Last, the geographical and possibly target companies one plans to apply at are identified.

Then the magic happens. Charlie McGillicuddy LLC uses research and network resources to calculate the most crucial data for job placement in the given field. This research includes the most commonly asked questions asked in that sector. And then we get to work. Through contact hours via SKYPE or in person if one happens to live in North Carolina, the candidate is mock interviewed with these specific questions and coached on how to answer truthfully from their experience but in the most desirable way that puts them in the most positive light.
The whole process also includes a personality profile, resume and background assessment, and related services to guarantee the most successful coaching experience possible.

Why does job interviewing coaching matter? It does not matter what a person knows if they can't communicate effectively. How can a person know if they need interview coaching? If a person has done five interviews with no call backs or even acknowledgement, it's time for a change. Why wait until there has been fifty failed interviews or even a hundred? Time is money and money is time. And every minute a job seeker spends seeking, that is a minute he or she is not getting paid. It is about HOW one answers the question, not just the facts conveyed. Job interviewing coaching fixes the root problem.

Job coaching and/or interview coaching is an investment. While buying a book or attending a seminar can impart knowledge, it can't develop the person's individual needs. Job interviewing is a strategy that must be PERSONALLY developed.  Think of it as "evolving toward employment".

Getting hired isn't about luck but it is about strategy.  Job interviewing strategy is about getting the best job in the fastest way possible. And in this competitive market, job interviewing coaching is going to become a crucial tool to stay ahead of the ever changing, increasingly complicated world of job interviewing.
